In English grammar, parts of speech refer to the categories into which words are classified based on their function in a sentence. There are eight main parts of speech:


1. Noun (সংজ্ঞা)

A noun is the name of a person, place, thing, or idea.

Types of Nouns:

  1. Proper Noun – Specific names (e.g., Rahul, Dhaka, Amazon).
  2. Common Noun – General names (e.g., boy, city, river).
  3. Concrete Noun – Can be touched or seen (e.g., table, water).
  4. Abstract Noun – Cannot be touched (e.g., love, bravery).
  5. Collective Noun – A group of things/people (e.g., team, flock).
  6. Countable & Uncountable Noun – Things that can/cannot be counted (apple vs. milk).

Example: The teacher gave the students homework.


2. Pronoun (সর্বনাম)

A pronoun replaces a noun to avoid repetition.

Types of Pronouns:

  1. Personal PronounsI, you, he, she, we, they
  2. Possessive Pronounsmine, yours, his, theirs
  3. Reflexive Pronounsmyself, yourself
  4. Demonstrative Pronounsthis, that, these, those
  5. Interrogative Pronounswho, what, which

3. Verb (ক্রিয়া)

5. Adverb (ক্রিয়া বিশেষণ)

An adverb modifies a verb, an adjective, or another adverb.

Types of Adverbs:

  3. Adverb of Placehere, there, everywhere
  4. Adverb of Frequencyalways, never, often
  5. Adverb of Degreevery, too, almost

6. Preposition (অব্যয়)

A preposition shows the relationship between a noun (or pronoun) and other words in a sentence.

Types of Prepositions:

  3. Prepositions of Directionto, towards, into
  4. Prepositions of Mannerby, with, like

7. Conjunction (সংযোজক অব্যয়)

A conjunction connects words, phrases, or clauses.

Types of Conjunctions:

  1. Coordinating Conjunctionsand, but, or, so
  2. Subordinating Conjunctionsbecause, although, since
  3. Correlative Conjunctionseither…or, neither…nor

Example: She was tired, but she continued working.


8. Interjection (আবেগসূচক অব্যয়)

An interjection expresses sudden emotions or feelings.

Examples:

  • Oh no! I forgot my keys.
  • Hurray! We won the match.
